A New Year, and a New Layout

In lieu of making New Year's resolutions, I decided to do a blog makeover. I'm still tweaking some things, so if you come by during the next few days and things are a bit wonky, that's why. (Don't you just love the word "wonky"? Maybe I should resolve to say "wonky" more often.)

***Thanks to André for informing me that the comment form wasn't working - I think it's back up now. Also, I seem to have lost some of my blog roll in the left sidebar, so if you don't see your blog there (and you'd like it to be there) please let me know.

I'm just a honky who's never felt wonky.

Did you really say "I'm a mom now, yikes"? What the hell's wrong with you?? I would love to have a child but can't and can't believe you would say crap like that. You're either disguising your bragging and pretending that it's not a big deal, which is stupid on itself, or being plain dumb.

    Gosh!

In my opinion, she said that because maybe she never thought she would be able to be a mom and finally got the opportunity after a long struggle so she was pretty excited when she became a mom. I'm pretty sure she loves being a mom and loves her child very much. Just my opinion.

  4. Anonymous, it's called self-deprecating humor. As in, "Yikes, why am I so lucky as to be a mom when many others could do it better?" Trust me, if I didn't want to have a child we wouldn't have spent tens of thousands of dollars and gone through years of numerous painful and invasive procedures to make it happen.

It's notoriously difficult to remain part of the infertility community after having a child (even though my husband and I are still infertile) and comments like this are a good example. I understand why. But I've got a newsflash: Even for those of us who go through hell and high water to achieve it, parenthood is HARD. I have been in many situations as a parent where "yikes" is about the mildest thing that can be said. That doesn't mean I don't love being a mother, and it doesn't mean I'm ungrateful. It just means that raising a child is tough going even in the best of circumstances.

I'm sorry for your struggles, and truly, I mean to offense to you or anyone in your position. I've been there.

  5. Chelsea is one of the best moms I know. Raising a child is tough, and I agree, Yikes is about as mild as it comes.

I think you need to make a resolution to say Yikes more :)

It's been difficult for me to come to grips with the fact that I will never be pregnant and never give birth.

  11. Well said!

Struggles with infertility do not make pregnancy or motherhood any easier.

By the way, I'm liking the new blog look. :)

  12. Wow, that comment by anonymous really shocked me! As if being a parent didn't require a "yikes" now matter how hard you worked to get there. (or how easily it came, for those lucky people.)

Plus, when I read that "yikes", what I took from it was, "I'm not a crazy, young, single thing anymore. I'm now responsible for another human being!" And that certainly requires a yikes!!

Some people are just out looking for ways to take offense, I guess.

p.s. I love your new blog look! guess we got distracted from that.
