In honor of the post over at FMH, I now present my very own List of Things I Hate.
-Having to get in my car and *drive* to the grocery store that I can see from my house, because there aren't any sidewalks along the roads.
-The exorbitant cost of housing where we live
-Yo Gabba Gabba
-Adults wearing Disney character clothing/memorabilia
-Infertility
-Names that are spelled strangely to make them "unique". Like Mikol instead of Michael, or Allyson instead of Allison. People, it's the SAME name! All you're doing is making it hard for people to spell your kid's name, and ensuring that they will forever have to explain to people how to spell and/or pronounce it. If you want your child's name to be unique, give them a name that actually *is* unique.
-Stepping in wetness when I'm wearing socks. The mere thought makes me shudder.
-That one person who doesn't merge when the sign says to merge, but drives up as far as they can go, then cuts someone off to get back in. You know who I'm talking about, there's always one.
-People who think their job is way more important than it actually is. The Michael Scotts of the world. There are lots of these in the DC area.
-The WGA strike.
-Menstrual cramps. Actually, menstrual anything.
-Babywise and the people who follow it like it's a religion
-Talking about immigration laws with my husband. Because we both get so, so angry.
-Misinformation about breastfeeding - it is so pervasive in our culture, and we wonder why so many women have trouble? (see above about Babywise)
-The fact that I can't speak French anymore. By the time I left my mission, people couldn't tell I was American because I spoke so well (they could tell I wasn't French - I wasn't that good - but they couldn't pinpoint where I was from - most people guessed Spain.) Last time we were there, a cab driver laughed at me because my accent was so bad. Very sad.
-Hot dogs

ReplyDeleteYo gabba gabba is scary, but I don't know that I'd go so far as to say that I hate it. I do hate hot dogs too. And menstrual anything.
ReplyDeleteI hate wetness on clothes enough to throw tantrums. It's amazing how much it bugs me.
ReplyDeleteAND the cutting in last minute. That's bad. What's even worse is riding in the car with someone that does it.

I love Babywise and some would say I follow it like a religion. I do not share your bitter feelings. You obviously are misinformed about the contents of Babywise. Babywise not only promotes breastfeeding, it provides mothers with a plan to get rest and maintain needed milk production.
ReplyDeletetheozz, So I guess on your Things I Hate list would be "People who hate Babywise." :P Believe it or not, I've read the book and I'm very familiar with its contents. I know people who use it and find that it's great for them. Obviously, I'm not one of them. I don't agree with the whole idea of "parent-led" feedings and scheduling young babies - but that's just me. I'm not bitter about it - I just don't agree with it. I have seen so many of my friends struggle with breastfeeding because they are trying to force a schedule instead of listening to their babies and allowing their bodies to do what it needs to. Breastfed babies need on-demand feedings, often much more frequent than the book recommends. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a warning about the book. And since this is my blog, I have no problem saying how I feel about it. But we can still be friends. ;)
ReplyDeleteI modified the Babywise method to fit what I needed. I really just used the whole "keep them up after they eat" thing and it worked great for me. But breastfeeding and I don't get along anyway (my boobs just don't make enough--and it gets worse with each kid) so I really just made it up with my last baby. I just followed the sleep, eat, wake cycle and didn't worry too much about the clock.

ReplyDeletei agree with everything you said, especially about those nutty ezzos and people who spell their kids' names weird just to be contrary. although i must say that i am equally hateful about KIDS who wear disney gear. (i hate disney, and things that are branded, just to be contrary. :D)
and while i agree with you 100 PERCENT about breastfeeding misinformation, i also hate when people go in the opposite direction and assume that any woman who did not nurse was just misinformed, lazy or uncommitted. that's one of my big pet peeves, as a lactivist, as a lactation counselor, and as a mother who was unable to nurse. (i'm not saying that you are like that - just sharing.)
chandelle, thanks for the comment - I love your blog and appreciate your comments over on FMH. And I agree with you 100% about those who are insensitive towards women who don't/aren't able to breastfeed.
